Don’t Fall Behind: 5 Essential Home Maintenance Tasks For Autumn

Posted by Andrew Balfour on Oct 4, 2017 5:05:06 AM

As the temperatures drop and leaves start falling from the trees, it’s easy to get lost on the beauty of autumn. But autumn also means that winter is just around the corner, and it’s important to spend a little time preparing your home for the challenges this snowy, cold season brings. Here are six essential fall home maintenance tasks to tackle this season.

Check Your Walkways and Railings

Nobody wants to slip and fall on the ice mid-winter, and falls are a lot less likely if all of your walkways and railings are in good shape. If you have any uneven pavers that may collect ice and present a tripping hazard, take the time to dig them out and even them. Tighten railing screws so they don’t wiggle, too.

Clean Your Gutters

Once the leaves have stopped falling, climb up on a ladder and clear your gutters. Having clear gutters is important in the winter since it will stop water from accumulating in the gutters, freezing, and causing damage to your roof.

Trim Your Bushes

Bush trimming is one of those fall home maintenance tasks that will pay off in the spring. Try not to remove more than 1/3 of their growth, as this can be tough on the plant. Use sanitized shears to avoid spreading any infections to the bush or shrub. While you’re at it, look over your trees. If you notice any dead or decaying branches, trim these away.

Seal Your Windows

If you have newer, airtight windows, you can skip this step. But if your windows are leaky or thin, consider placing a sheet of plastic over each one. Home improvement stores sell plastic sheeting specifically for this purpose. The sheets provide an extra layer of insulation and stop cold air from seeping in. Insulating blinds are a good substitute.

Clean the Chimney

If you have a fireplace, have a professional come clean your chimney before you light that first autumn fire. A clean chimney is a safe chimney. Check your carbon monoxide detector while you’re at it.
