Spring Home Maintenance: Windows and Doors

Posted by Andrew Balfour on May 12, 2022 2:16:00 PM

Spring is the perfect time to look over your windows and doors and perform any necessary maintenance. Winter can be hard on these structures, and properly maintaining them in spring ensures they're ready to keep working for you, come summer. So, what should your spring window and door maintenance entail? Here are the key tasks to include in your list.

1. Clean the Glass

A quick wipe down with blue spray and a paper towel may be good enough throughout the year, but for your spring cleaning, go a little further. Use a squeegee and a spray bottle to clean your windows more thoroughly. Spray the glass from top to bottom, then squeegee the liquid off. This should give you a thorough, streak-free result. Clean all of your windows, inside and out, in this way.

2. Clean the Frames and Sashes

Cleaning the frames and sashes will help remove any dust and freshen up your windows' look. You can use an all-purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth for this task. If you come across any grime between the sash and the window glass, try using a cotton swab to reach it.

3. Check the Weatherstripping and Caulk

Cracked weatherstripping or peeling caulk can lead to moisture leaks when the spring showers arrive. While you're cleaning the windows, look over the weatherstripping and caulk. If there are any areas where it is moldly, cracked, peeling, or altogether missing, make plans for a window company or spring home maintenance company to replace it.

4. Test the Hardware

Try opening and closing every window. Check the locks to make sure they latch completely. If any of the hardware is broken, make plans to have it replaced. If the hinges or latches are simply stiff, try applying some lubricant to them. Open and close them a few times to work the lubricant into the hardware.

5. Try Your Screens

You don't want to find out that your screens don't fit or don't latch into the frames on the first warm summer day. Try the screens out now to make sure they work. This way, if you do need to replace or repair any screens, you have time to take care of this spring home maintenance before summer.

6. Wash Your Window Treatments

Window treatments can get caked with dust and debris over the winter. Take the time now to remove and wash them. Clean window treatments will keep your windows cleaner all year long.

Send heavy curtains to the dry cleaners. Give blinds and shades a thorough wipe-down with an all-purpose cleaner. If you put a sock on your hand and spray it with cleaner, you can grasp each blind and slide your hand down its length to clean it with the sock.
